Pathankot on alert as 2 armed men spotted | India News

PATHANKOT: The alleged presence of two armed suspects in the Pathankot area has prompted heightened vigilance, leading to extensive combing and sanitisation operations along the India-Pakistan international border in Pathankot and the Pathankot-Jammu inter-state border.
Deputy inspector general (DIG), Border Range, Rakesh Kumar Kaushal said suspicious movement was detected Tuesday night.
Consequently, the area was cordoned off, and an alert was issued to allied security agencies, such as the Border Security Force (BSF), the Army, and the Air Force, who soon gathered and began the combing and sanitisation operations.
He informed that two armed persons with their faces covered and carrying backpacks arrived at a farmhouse and demanded food from migrant labourers present there. They left after consuming the food. The farmhouse is situated close to both the Pakistan border and Kathua district of J&K, said the DIG.
It is also learned that the suspected armed militants threatened the migrant labourers of dire consequences if they reported their presence to the police.
By the time of filing of this report the combing operation was going on to trace the terrorists.
Pathankot senior superintendent of police (SSP) Suhail Qasim Mir informed that the movement of two armed suspects was initially spotted on the outskirts of Kot Bhattian village, which borders Kathua district in J&K.
Subsequently, we received information indicating that the suspects had been seen heading towards Kot Pannun village in Kathua, he said.
Notably, on June 12, security forces had gunned down two terrorists, believed to have been intruded from Pakistan, in an encounter at Siada Sukhpal village in the Hiranagar sector of Kathua district.
In the past, armed fidayeen representing the United Jihad Council had stormed the Pathankot Air Force base on January 2, 2016.
Kaushal informed that despite extensive efforts by security forces to locate the suspected persons they remained elusive. He, however, said: “There is no cause for alarm as we (security forces) maintain control over the situation.”
Meanwhile, the Chamba police administration in Himachal Pradesh has also heightened alert levels in the higher reaches of the district bordering Kathua in J&K.
SSP, Chamba, Abhishek Yadav said an alert had been issued at the border outpost ‘Seva Bridge’ connecting Kathua. Also, all the outer check posts have been instructed to vigilantly monitor any suspicious movements, he said.
