General Upendra Dwivedi takes charge as the 30th Army chief | India News

NEW Delhi: General Upendra Dwivedi took charge as the new Army chief on Sunday.
General Dwivedi, with extensive operational expertise along the borders of China and Pakistan, held the position of vice chief of the Army.
Prior to that, he held various command and staff appointments in his career, including the position of general officer commanding-in-chief of Northern command from 2022 until 2024.He provided strategic guidance and operational oversight for operations along the Northern and Western borders, as well as counter-terrorism operations in J-K.
In his role as the army chief, he is responsible for collaborating with the Navy and the Indian Air Force to implement the government’s plan of establishing theatre commands.
Hailing from Madhya Pradesh, General Dwivedi studied at Sainik School Rewa and joined the National Defence Academy in 1981. Commissioned into the 18th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in 1984, he later commanded the unit in Kashmir and Rajasthan.
General Dwivedi has also been involved in modernizing and equipping the largest command of the Indian Army, promoting indigenous equipment as part of Atmanirbhar Bharat. He also worked towards synergizing with the people of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh for nation-building and infrastructure development.
His staff exposures include handling conventional operations, providing logistical support, and operating a Strike Corps in deserts. He contributed significantly to the military mecretary’s branch and the Military Operations Directorate at IHQ HQ (Army). As DG infantry, he fast-tracked capital procurement cases of weapons for all three services.
The officer’s overseas tenures include Somalia and Seychelles, where he served as military advisor to the government of Seychelles. He attended the Staff College, Wellington, higher command course at AWC, Mhow, and was conferred ‘Distinguished Fellow’ in the NDC equivalent course at USAWC, Carlisle, USA. He holds an MPhil in defence & management studies and two Master’s degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.
General Dwivedi is married to Sunita Dwivedi, a science graduate and homemaker associated with Aarushi, an institute for special ability children in Bhopal. The couple has two daughters who work with NGOs.
