NEW DELHI: Andy Murray, a two-time champion, has withdrawn from the singles competition at Wimbledon, which will be his final tournament at the All England Club. The 37-year-old pulled out due to complications from recent surgery to remove a spinal cyst. He will still participate in the doubles event with his brother, Jamie.
Reuters has reported that Murray’s management team confirmed the decision on Tuesday.Despite his efforts to recover following the surgery that took place just over a week ago, he determined it would be best not to play singles.
“Unfortunately, despite working incredibly hard on his recovery since his operation just over a week ago, Andy has taken the very difficult decision not to play the singles this year,” Murray’s team stated.
“As you can imagine, he is extremely disappointed but has confirmed that he will be playing in the doubles with Jamie and looks forward to competing at Wimbledon for the last time.”
Murray had been scheduled to face Czech player Tomas Machac in the singles competition. His career highlights at Wimbledon include ending a 77-year wait for a British men’s singles champion in 2013 and securing the title again in 2016.
The British tennis star has mentioned that he is unlikely to continue his career beyond this year and may conclude it at the Olympics in Paris. The tennis events at the Olympics are due to begin on July 27.
