Graft case: Delhi HC seeks CBI's response on CM Arvind Kejriwal's bail plea

NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Friday issued notice to the CBI on a plea moved by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking bail in a corruption case related to the excise policy matter.
Justice Neena Bansal Krishna issued a notice to the CBI on the bail plea and listed it for further hearing on July 17.

Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, argued that the AAP leader is neither a flight risk nor a terrorist, and pointed out that the CBI arrested him after he received bail in the ED’s money laundering case.
Advocate DP Singh, representing the CBI, objected to Kejriwal approaching the high court directly without first filing a bail plea before the trial court.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener was arrested by the CBI on June 26 from Tihar Jail, where he remains in judicial custody related to a money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Kejriwal was initially arrested by the ED on March 21 and was granted bail by the trial court in the money laundering case on June 20. However, the high court stayed the trial court’s order.

The excise policy was revoked in 2022 after the Delhi lieutenant governor ordered a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities and corruption in its formulation and implementation.
According to the CBI and ED, irregularities were committed during the modification of the excise policy, and undue favours were allegedly extended to licence holders.
