Mumbai hit-and-run case: Shiv Sena leader detained after son rams BMW into bike, kills woman | India News

NEW DELHI: The Mumbai Police on Sunday detained Eknath Shinde faction’s Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah after his son’s speeding BMW rammed into a two-wheeler killing a woman. The driver, who was present in the car at the time of the accident has also been arrested.
Meanwhile, his son Mihir Shah is absconding.
“Worli hit-and-run case accused person’s father Rajesh Shah in custody at Worli police station one more person, Rajendra Singh who was present in the car, is also in custody.The police do not have any information about Mihir yet,” DCP Zone 3, Krishnakant Upadhyay said.
The victim, identified as Kaveri Nakhwa (45), was traveling with her husband Pradip from Sassoon Dock in Colaba to their home in Worli Koliwada when the incident occurred around 5:30am. The impact was so severe that Kaveri was thrown onto the car’s bonnet, and the driver fled the scene after continuing to drive for about 100 meters.
The police will not shield anyone, says Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde
Speaking about the incident, Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde assured that the law is equal for everyone and that the police will not shield anyone in this case. Asked if the man involved in the Mumbai accident was a Shiv Sena leader’s son, the CM just said, “The law is equal for all and the government sees every case in the same way. There will be no separate rule for this accident. Everything will be done as per the law.”
Aaditya Thackeray says ‘no political refuge’
Aaditya Thackeray also visited the Worli Police Station and met with senior police officers investigating the case. He expressed hope that there would be no political refuge for the accused and that justice would be served.
In a post on X, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and local MLA Aaditya Thackeray said he would not go into the “political leanings” of Shah but hoped “there will be no political refuge by the regime”.
“Visited the Worli Police Station today and met with senior police officers investigating into the hit and run case that occurred in Worli today. I will not go into the political leanings of Mr Shah, the accused of the hit and run, but I hope the police will act swiftly to catch the accused and bring him to justice. Hopefully there will be no political refuge by the regime,” Thackeray said.
This incident comes less than two months after a similar case in Pune, where two IT professionals were killed by a Porsche allegedly driven by an inebriated minor. The case garnered national attention due to the lenient bail terms granted to the accused and the alleged efforts by the accused’s parents and doctors to tamper with evidence.
