NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday supported India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics, highlighting it as a key step to inspire the nation and promote meritocracy in sports.
President Murmu expressed her admiration for indigenous sports like kabaddi and shared her thoughts on India’s Olympic aspirations.
“I do like watching sports although I did not get too many opportunities to play. But when I could, I preferred Indian sports,” president Murmu said.
“The Olympics should definitely happen in India. It would inspire people and promote merit in sports,” the president, who also wrote an exclusive signed article for PTI on crimes against women, said.
A decision regarding the 2036 Olympics host country is expected between 2026 and 2027, post the International Olympic Committee’s elections next year.
Poland, Mexico, Indonesia, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have also shown interest in hosting the Games.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the Independence Day celebrations earlier this month, expressed confidence in India’s capability to host the Olympics.
“It is the dream of India to host the 2036 Olympics, we are making preparations for that,” he stated.
Murmu echoed her support for the bid during her address to a joint sitting of the Parliament in June. She shared pictures of herself playing badminton with Saina Nehwal at the Rashtrapati Bhavan last month, highlighting her involvement in sports. The caption to the pictures stated that the president has a “natural love for sports.”
On another note, Murmu flagged off the trophy tour for the Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football tournament, from Rashtrapati Bhavan.
