NEW DELHI: Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal delivered an outstanding performance in the English County Championship, helping Northamptonshire secure a nine-wicket victory over Leicestershire in their Division Two match.
Chahal’s impressive figures included 5 for 134 in the second innings and 4 for 82 in the first, resulting in a total of nine wickets for the match.His contributions were essential in bowling out Leicestershire for 316, enabling Northamptonshire an easy target to chase.
Despite Scott Currie’s century (120) and a crucial 110-run partnership with Tom Scriven (48), Chahal managed to break their resistance. Chahal’s consistent pressure earned him crucial wickets, including that of Currie. He also dismissed Leicestershire captain Lewis Hill (14) and Liam Trevaskis (2).

Leicestershire began the final day at 69 for 4, but Chahal’s determined efforts stifled their progress. His standout moment was removing Currie, which left Leicestershire struggling at 303 for 9. Saif Zaib (2 for 61) then concluded the innings by dismissing Louis Kimber, setting Northamptonshire a target of 137 runs.
Northamptonshire’s batsmen quickly chased down the target in 30.3 overs. Captain Luke Procter led the way with an unbeaten 68, supported by George Bartlett’s 54 not out. Although Gus Miller fell early for 11, the team sealed a comfortable win.
This victory follows Chahal’s previous standout performance against Derbyshire, where he also had notable bowling figures of 5 for 45 and 4 for 45. Chahal’s consistent form has significantly contributed to Northamptonshire’s progress in the County Championship.
