The leaders are focused on strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, with both PM Modi and President Biden emphasising the strong and dynamic relationship between the two nations.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), President Biden emphasised the significance of the relationship, saying, “The United States’ partnership with India is stronger, closer, and more dynamic than any time in history.Prime Minister Modi, each time we sit down, I’m struck by our ability to find new areas of cooperation. Today was no different.”
PM Modi was warmly received at Biden’s residence, where the two leaders shared a handshake and embraced before their bilateral meeting.
“A special start to a significant visit. @POTUS @JoeBiden warmly received PM @narendramodi at his residence in Greenville, Delaware,” the prime minister’s office said in a post on X.
Prime minister Modi, in his departure statement from New Delhi, had expressed his intent to further enhance ties with the US, he said, “My meeting with President Biden will allow us to review and identify new pathways to deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership for the benefit of our people and the global good.”
The meeting also addressed global issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan indicated that the conflict could be a significant topic of discussion, particularly in light of PM Modi’s recent visit to Kyiv.
Prime minister Modi was accompanied by external affairs minister S. Jaishankar, foreign secretary Vikram Misri, and Indian ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra.
The US delegation included Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, and US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti.
As part of his three-day visit to the US, PM Modi will also hold bilateral meetings with Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida, who are also attending the Quad Summit.
The Quad, a strategic partnership between India, the US, Australia, and Japan, aims to promote peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
In addition to the summit, the Quad leaders are expected to launch a significant initiative to address cancer care and explore peaceful solutions to ongoing global conflicts, including those in Ukraine and Gaza.
During his visit, Prime minister Modi will also address the Indian community in Long Island and participate in a roundtable with leading American CEOs focused on advanced technologies like AI and quantum computing.
From Wilmington, PM Modi will travel to New York to attend the “Summit of the Future” at the UN General Assembly, focusing on global development and security.
