NEW DELHI: A man accused of sexually assaulting two toddlers at a school in Badlapur fired at a police officer in custody and was injured in retaliatory firing, police said on Monday.
The accused, who was an attendant at the Badlapur school, was arrested last month for sexually assaulting two girls, aged four and five, inside the school’s washroom. A case has also been filed against the school’s chairman and secretary under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for negligence and failure to report the incident promptly.
The chairman and secretary have moved the Bombay High Court seeking pre-arrest bail after their requests were denied by a special court. Their pleas will be heard on October 1.
In response to public outrage over lapses in the investigation, the Maharashtra government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to handle the case. The Bombay High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and is supervising the probe.
