BANDUNG: Two people were killed and eight injured on Wednesday in the Indonesian town of Bandung when a suspected Islamist militant, who may have been angered by the country’s new penal code, blew himself up at a police station, it said authorities.
Ahmad Ramadhanhead of the national police’s public information office, said authorities were coordinating with the counter-terrorism unit to investigate the incident, which killed the alleged attacker and a police officer.
The Jamaah inspired by the Islamic State Ansharout Daulah (JAD) may be behind the attack, Ibnu Suhendra of the Indonesian Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT) told Metro TV. He said JAD had carried out similar attacks in Indonesia.
West Java the chief of police Suntana told Metro TV that authorities are investigating a blue motorcycle found at the scene, which they believe was used by the assailant. Attached to the bike was a note with a message rejecting Indonesia’s new penal code, which parliament ratified on Tuesday.
“There was a note on the motorbike saying that the penal code is an unfaithful product, let’s stamp out law enforcement,” Suntana said.
Some religious extremists reject state laws, viewing Islam as the only legitimate authority, analysts say.
The attacker brought two bombs to the scene, Suntana said, but only had time to detonate one.
Images of the scene on Wednesday showed damage to the police station, with building debris on the ground and smoke rising from the area.
In recent years, Islamic militants have carried out attacks in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, including on churches, police stations and places frequented by foreigners.
In an effort to crack down on militants, Indonesia created a tough new anti-terrorism law after JAD-linked suicide bombings.
Members of the extremist group were responsible for a series of suicide bomb attacks on a church in the city of Surabaya in 2018. These attacks were carried out by three families, including young children, and killed at least 30 people .
In 2021, two newlyweds from the JAD carried out a suicide bomb attack in a cathedral in Makassar, killing only themselves.
