Doctors ‘can’t think of natural cause’ for baby’s projectile vomit allegedly overfed by nurse Lucy Letby

A doctor testifying at the trial of alleged murderous neonatal nurse Lucy Letby in the UK said she “couldn’t think of a natural cause” for the severe projectile vomiting of a baby who would have been injured in her care.

Letby, 32, is accused of overfeeding the sick baby, referred to in court as Child G, while working in the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital in September 2015, according to the BBC.

Letby allegedly murdered seven children and attempted to kill 10 others during a year-long killing spree between June 2015 and June 2016. She denied all 22 charges against her.

Letby allegedly attempted to kill baby G on three separate occasions, Manchester Crown Court was told. Prosecutors say he pumped extra milk and air into the baby’s system, causing it irreversible brain damage.

Dr Stephen Breary, who was serving as a consultant on-call at the neonatal unit at the time, testified in court that the baby’s condition had “improved” and was “stable” on 6 September 2015.

Breary told the court early Sept. 7 that he received an emergency call because the baby had “very large projectile vomit” that ended up on the floor and in a chair next to his crib. The baby collapsed around 2am that day after Letby started her night shift in the hospital.

“This was not something I had witnessed before,” Breary said.

Dr Dewi Evans, another medical expert who has looked into the case for the National Crime Agency, testified that such severe vomiting for a small child was “amazing”.

“For a child of [4.4 pounds] throwing up that far is pretty remarkable,” he said. “Even more amazing is the vomiting that ends up in the chair. It’s several meters away.”

“I can’t remember a kid who vomited on the floor. I can’t remember a kid who vomited that far away. It was quite correctly described as extraordinary,” Evans added.

Evans told the court he believes the only explanation for the baby’s vomiting was that she “had gotten a lot more milk” than the approved 1.5 ounces in her feeding tube, and that such “can’t happen accidentally.”

Prosecutor Nick Johnson earlier told the jury he suffered from the “same problem” later that month, following a documented feed from Letby.

“There had been no significant problems with G. She had vomited because she had been given too much milk and air,” she said.

The baby’s father, who was moved to the Countess of Chester in August 2015 after being born premature at 23 weeks, told the court his daughter had been left severely disabled after Letby allegedly attempted to kill her.

“When she was in the Countess of Chester’s incubator she smiled at the sound of my voice,” the father said. “After the vomiting, she was different and she no longer responded to my voice.”
