WESTERN ALLIS, Wisdom – Most Americans who spoke to Fox News in Wisconsin agreed that Taiwan is his country amid the tensions over the island’s independence from China.
“Taiwan is definitely his country,” one man, Dustin, told Fox News. “It is its independent country and they have the sovereign right to exist.”
Another agreed and said: “China should mind its own business and stay out of that independent country.”
China considers Taiwan its territory, while the island government rejects these claims and operates as a self-governing democracy since 1949. Beijing is demanding that countries seeking relations with China sever formal ties with Taiwan, although the United States has informal links with the island government continued.

“If we want to call Taiwan a country, I think we should,” said one man, Michael. “Frankly, I don’t care if China gets angry.”
“Who are they to tell the United States what to do?” Michele added. “We want to maintain dignified foreign relations, but they don’t dictate what we do”.

Yet candy maker Mars Wrigley apologized to China last week after a Snickers ad calling Taiwan a country went viral.
“Mars Wrigley respects China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity and conducts its business operations in strict compliance with local Chinese laws and regulations,” the apology said.

One person said Taiwan “should be” his own country.
“I think I thought it was,” said another. “It’s probably pretty bad for me that I didn’t know.”

One participant, Don, said: “Well, China actually rules it in a certain way, but I give a lot to Nancy Pelosi for going there and resisting the Chinese.”
Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, visited Taiwan earlier this month. In response, Beijing sanctioned Pelosi and his family, fired missiles on the island and held military exercises nearby.
“I think China should leave them alone,” a woman who views Taiwan as an independent nation told Fox News. “Just like [Russian President Vladimir] Putin should leave Ukraine alone. ”
