THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/NEW DELHI: Legendary athlete e Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha collapsed on Saturday before media reports claimed that illegal construction was taking place on the campus of his academy in Kozhikode district and that strangers were entering the property posing a threat to the safety of inmates.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, those at Usha School of said Athletics she has been facing such harassment and security issues for quite some time and it escalated after she became a member of Rajya Sabha.
Usha had been appointed to the upper house by the BJP in July 2022.
The ‘queen of sprint’ appealed to the leftist government of Kerala and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to intervene on the matter and take immediate steps to stop the alleged encroachment and encroachment on the campus and ensure the safety of the female athletes.
“Of the 25 female athletes in Usha schools, 11 were from North India. It is our responsibility to ensure their safety. I have submitted a written complaint to the Chief Minister about this,” she said.
A teary-eyed Usha also said that waste is being dumped on a large scale on the campus, which is also under threat from the drug mafia, but the local panchayat did not allow the academy management to build an enclosure wall.
“An illegal construction was done right in the middle of the campus by someone and when we asked, they said they have the approval of the panchayat authorities for it. The school management also had to suffer some rude behavior when they questioned this violation “, he said.
Usha said the 30-acre land, where the Usha School of Athletics is located, was handed over to them by the previous Oommen Chandy-led Congress government in the state for a 30-year lease.
Asked whether members of her academy were facing harassment and ill-treatment after she was appointed to the Rajya Sabha by the BJP, she said every political party used to regard her as a member of her political rival.
“Congress would say I am a CPI(M) sympathizer while the Marxist party would say I have a BJP affiliation.
“I have no politics and was helping everyone in any way possible,” he added.
