DEHRADUN: The district of Chamoli administration recognized new cracks in houses affected by subsidence Joshimath city ​​after being in denial mode for over two weeks. According to the district administration’s latest bulletin, updated on Monday, the number of houses with cracks in Joshimath rose by five – to 868 from 863 – a figure that had remained unchanged since January 20 even as residents said they were appearing more cracks in the city.
“We tried to draw attention to new cracks and gaps widening in our homes, but the administration kept arguing that the situation was the same and there were no new harm it was done,” said Pranav Sharma (22), a Singhdhar resident.
On 6 February, TOI had reported new cracks and widening of existing ones at several places in Joshimath, especially in Singhdhar.
This came after Joshimath SDM Kumkum Joshi acknowledged on Sunday that “certain cracks had widened in some parts of the city, especially in Singhdhar, and the technical teams would conduct surveys again in those places.”
All five houses that reported new cracks are located in the Singhdhar municipal district.
Of the total 181 unsafe houses in the nine wards of Joshimath, Singhdhar has the most at 98, followed by 28 each in Gandhinagar and Sunil and 27 in Manoharbagh.
