Mayor John Tory of Toronto, Canada has announced his resignation following public revelations of an affair with a former female aide.
Tory, 68, admitted to being in a romantic relationship with an unnamed 31-year-old woman after the Toronto Star reported the affair.

The relationship began during the COVID-19 pandemic, Tory said, during a time he was regularly away from his wife for more than 40 years.
The mayor told the press that the extramarital affair “ended by mutual agreement this year”.

“I am deeply sorry and unreservedly apologize to the people of Toronto and all those who have been hurt by my actions,” Tory said in his statement. “Above all, I apologize to my wife, Barb, and to my family whom I have let down more than anyone.”
Tory was elected mayor of Toronto in 2014. He was re-elected in 2018 and won again in 2022.

“I deeply regret having to leave a job I love in a city I love even more,” said Tory. “I believe, in my heart, that it’s best that I fully commit to the work needed to repair even these most important relationships.”
