“I’m sorry I left abruptly and I wish it had ended on a different note.”
The 30-year-old Australian, who holds the league’s single-game goalscoring record with 53 points, joined the Sparks in February and has since averaged 13.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 25 games.
“It is with support that we share Liz Cambage’s decision to terminate her contract with the organization,” Sparks managing partner Eric Holoman said in a team press release in July. “We want the best for Liz and have agreed to part ways amicably.”
After his departure on July 26, Los Angeles lost eight of its last nine regular season games and failed to qualify for the playoffs for the second straight year.
“I hope the WNBA does its part to create safer environments and a stronger support system for its players,” Cambage’s message continued.
“Although I will miss the purple and gold rock, I will take this time to focus on my healing and personal growth before providing clarification on past rumours.”
The Sparks signed Cambage as a free agent before allegations that she directed racial slurs at the Nigeria national team during behind-closed-doors training ahead of last year’s Olympics came to light public in May 2022.
“Charges relating to the three other alleged incidents have been dismissed,” the statement continued, without specifying their nature. Cambage denies the allegations and subsequently withdrew from the Australian Olympic team due to mental health concerns.
