BRIGHTON (England): Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has said the team’s poor performance this season was his fault as he shifted blame away from his players after the 5-2 premier league defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.
Leicester defended poorly and gave up possession too easily in another demoralizing loss that left them just one point from their first six games after losing their last five in a row, their worst start to a season since 1983-84.
Next up is a home game against Aston Villa.
“You can only work hard,” Rodgers told BBC Sport. “We have to get the players back for another home game next week which will be a great opportunity for us. If we can keep the game going longer and not make mistakes we can build to get a result.”
The loss will put Rodgers’ position in the spotlight and he has accepted the blame for their fate.
“I focus on the football and try to give the players the confidence and the structure of our game to get back to winning ways,” he said. “We will arrive with new energy, focus and hopefully confidence in the game next week.
“You put in the hard yards now and work, don’t shirk responsibility. The results are up to me, I’m the manager, and we have to go and work even harder and get that first win.”
Leicester were unable to retain possession at Brighton which Rodgers said was not unique.
“That was a problem for a while,” he said. “Simplicity goes out of your game if you lack confidence and stay on the ball longer than you should. At the moment that’s not quite the case for us.
“In spells we look dangerous, but we don’t hold onto the ball long enough to sustain any period of the game.”
