At least 21 people drown after boat capsizes in India | world news

A boat has capsized in southern India, killing at least 21 people, authorities said.

The vessel, which was carrying around 40 passengers, overturned near Tanur town in Malappuram district of Kerala state.

Police believe he was overcrowded when he got into trouble around 7pm local time on Sunday.

A dozen passengers were being treated in several hospitals.

Officials said they fear some people are still missing.

Kerala Fisheries and Port Development Minister V Abdurahiman told reporters the boat was stuck in muddy waters and attempts were underway to pull it out.

A National Disaster Response Force team was at the site, a spokesman for the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Sorrowful at the loss of life due to the boat accident in Malappuram, Kerala.”
