Rauf officiated in 64 Tests – 49 as an on-field referee, 15 as a third referee; 139 ODIs (98 on the pitch, 41 as third referee); and 28 T20I (23 on the field, 5 as third referee). He was one of the best referees of his time and became a member of the ICC’s elite panel in 2006, a year after refereeing his first Test.
Along with Aleem Dar, he helped improve the status of Pakistani referees before the era of neutral referees.

Rauf played for National Bank and Railroads during his long first-class career as a mid-level hitter, averaging 28.76 in 71 first-class games.

Rauf’s career was ruined by accusations of spot-fixing and match-fixing at cricket matches, and in February 2016 he was suspended for five years after being found guilty of corruption.
