The attendance record was another important development in a banner year for women’s football, with attendance records also broken at the Women’s European Championships and Women’s Champions League.
Arsenal put on a show from the start for the 47,367 fans crammed inside the Emirates Stadium, with a goal for Beth Mead after just five minutes, before Vivianne Miedema added two more either side of the header from Raffaele Souza to complete the rout.
“First of all, thank you to the fans for coming. We put on a show and I hope they enjoyed it,” Arsenal captain Kim Little told the BBC.
“You’re so aware of it, you can hear it now. It makes a big difference and this summer the English girls have felt it. I’m just happy we were able to put on a performance.”
Little had helped engineer Arsenal’s first goal, finding Mead unmarked on the edge of the penalty area.
Although her first effort ricocheted off her, the Euro Golden Boot winner was right on her second attempt.
Arsenal’s power kept Tottenham locked in their own half for much of the first half and Spurs couldn’t convert a rare 38th-minute chance with Celin Bizet Ildhusoy unable to clear the keeper of the Gunners Manuela Zinsberger.
In just five minutes Arsenal doubled their lead as Spurs conceded possession just outside their own box to the delight of Miedema who pounced on the loose ball and sent it past the goalkeeper. coaster goal Becky Spencer.
The Gunners’ dominance continued after half-time, with Souza taking advantage of a corner kick to head the ball into the net.
Once again the red and white flags on either side of the goal unfurled, waving from side to side as if leading the crowd in their celebrations.
The next cheer came from off the pitch as the record attendance was officially announced, breaking the previous best of 38,262 set in 2019 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
And there was still time for more festivities as Miedema scored his second goal of the afternoon from a Steph Catley cross into the box.
With those four goals, Arsenal sealed their tenth consecutive WSL victory and continued their cleanliness record in the WSL since March 6.
