Europa League: Manchester United and Arsenal scrape wins as Real Sociedad claim top-two spot | Football News

GDANSK (Poland): Manchester United’s Scott McTominay netted a last-minute strike to spare his side blushes as they cruised to a 1-0 win at home to Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League Thursday.
Arsenal also secured a 1-0 victory at Bodo/Glimt with a goal from Bukayo Saka to claim three straight Europa League wins as they took another step towards top spot in Group A.
United managed 34 shots and dominated possession in the Group E encounter but barely managed to snatch the points.
In the other match of their group, Real Sociedad became the second LaLiga side to secure a top-two spot as goals from Alexander Sorloth, Diego Rico and substitute Roberto Navarro secured a 3-0 win at home to Sheriff.
Real Betis, Fenerbahce, Rennes and Freiburg all finished in the top two, guaranteeing at least a place in the knockout stage earlier on Thursday.
United put Omonoia under pressure early on but were frustrated and went into the break 0-0.
They continued to squander second-half chances with boos resounding around Old Trafford until a crescendo of relief when substitute McTominay scored three minutes into stoppage time.
SAKA STRIKES
Arsenal got their winner in the 24th minute when Saka’s deflected shot inside the box caught Glimt keeper Nikita Khaikin off guard and bounced inside the bottom left post.
PSV Eindhoven kept the pressure on the Gunners with a 5-0 thrashing of visitors FC Zurich that took them seven points clear of Arsenal from nine. The Swiss team is down without points and out of contention for the next phase of the competition.
In Group C, Betis drew 1-1 with AS Roma after Sergio Canales’ goal was canceled out by Andrea Belotti, but that was enough for the LaLiga side to secure a place among the first two.
Ludogorets put pressure on Jose Mourinho’s Roma as the Bulgarian side won 2-0 at home to HJK Helsinki to move seven points clear of the Italians with four and two games remaining.
The Finnish champions can now only secure a third-place finish which secures a place in the Europa Conference League.
Fenerbahce and Rennes will finish in the top two of Group B after the Turks’ 2-1 win at AEK Larnaca, while Christopher Wooh saw Rennes win 1-0 in Krakow against Dynamo Kyiv.
In Group D, a hat-trick from Vitor Oliveira of SC Braga was not enough to secure victory at the top of Union SG as the teams drew 3-3.
Union Berlin stayed close to the leaders by winning 1-0 at home to Malmo after defender Robin Knoche scored in the 89th minute. The result means the Swedish team will finish bottom.
Lazio and Sturm Graz drew 2-2 in Roma, keeping Group F wide open, while Ferencvaros have the advantage in Group H after a 2-1 win at home to Red Star Belgrade, with Trabzonspor are three points from second after beating visitors Monaco 4-0.
