Elon Musk said he is buying Manchester United football team.
The Tesla boss, who has a history of irreverent tweets, tweeted Wednesday: “I’m buying welcome to Manchester United.”
While it wasn’t immediately clear whether he was going to pursue a deal, Musk’s tweet shocked Twitter users.
Manchester United fans have been protesting in recent years against the American Glazer family, who bought the club in 2005, due to the team’s struggles on the pitch.
The Glazer family did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The anti-Glazer movement gained momentum last year after United got involved in a failed attempt to form a separatist European Super League.
Manchester United have been champions of England for a record 20 times and have won the European Cup three times, the most prestigious club competition in world football.
But unrest among fans over how the club was run was exacerbated by the team’s poor start to the season, losing their first two games including last Saturday’s 4-0 humiliation from Brentford.
As of Tuesday’s close, the football club had a market cap of $ 2.08 billion.

Some fans have urged Musk – the richest man in the world – to buy Manchester United instead of buying Twitter.
The billionaire, who runs Tesla and SpaceX, is looking to get out of a $ 44 billion deal to buy the social media company, which took him to court.
In April, he announced a plan to buy Twitter, but then ripped the deal in July, sending shares in the tech firm well below the amount it had agreed to pay them.
The company has now sued him to try to force him to fulfill his previous promise to acquire it as well a trial has been set for October 17th.
