NEW DELHI: Former Indian hockey captain and member of the 1998 Asian Games gold medal team, Dilip Tirkeywas elected on Friday as Hockey India (HI) president, after two others, who had filed nominations for the post, withdrew ahead of the election.
One of the most capped former players – Tikey played a record 412 international appearances during his more than 15-year career as a defender – the 44-year-old great from Odisha represented India at the Games in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. Olympic Games.
Hockey India’s electoral process was expected to be completed by October 9 as per the deadline set by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the Committee of Trustees (CoA) in August.
Before Tirkey was elected president, Hockey India was under the jurisdiction of the CoA by order of the Delhi High Court due to an alleged violation of the National Sporting Code.
Tirkey thanked the CoA and its members after he became president of the national sports federation, tweeting “Thank you @DrSYQuraishi (Member of the COA) and @FIH_Hockey for organizing a smooth election from @TheHockeyIndia. I will ensure that Indian hockey is reaching new heights.”

The FIH also congratulated Tirkey on his election as head of Hockey India, saying in its letter from Lausanne on Friday: “At the outset, the FIH would like to thank the members of the Trustees Committee for joining and ensuring Hockey India’s election process went smoothly The FIH monitored the election process through the Hockey India website and media reports in India.
“We are happy to observe that the Executive Board of Hockey India is elected as posted on the Hockey India website as of today, and the election of positions was unanimous for all positions. We are delighted that the election process has been completed and We extend our congratulations to Dr Dilip Tirkey, Mr Bhola Nath Singh (General Secretary) and Mr Sekar J Manoharan (Treasurer) and look forward to working closely collaboration with them.
“We have appreciated the efficient efforts of the CoA over the past two months to restore the democratically elected body of Hockey India,” the FIH said.
“As of today, 23rd September 2022, we note that the CoA has completed its term, and the FIH will now communicate directly with the newly elected Executive Council on matters relating to hockey in India. We thank you again for your efforts and I hope you will all be our guests for the next professional hockey league matches which are due to start from October 28, 2022 and the 2023 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup which is due to start from January 13, 2023.”
