BERLIN: Chancellor Olaf Scholz found himself standing next to two topless women for a photoshoot on Sunday when the pair suddenly took their swimsuits off.
The two protesters had sought a selfie with the German leader during the government open weekend.
But they took off their tops, revealing slogans calling for a “gas embargo now” against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
The demonstrators were quickly taken away by security agents.
Germanyheavily dependent on Russian gas, has so far been unable to impose a comprehensive ban on gas imports from the country.
However, he is desperate to get away from Russian energy.
Responding to questions from the audience earlier on Sunday, Scholz had pointed to various efforts by Berlin to seek alternative energy sources, including liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Scholz said he hopes the first terminals Germany is rushing to build for LNG imports can be operational by early next year.
“Then our supply security problem can be solved at the beginning of 2024,” he said.
As Russia limits gas supplies to Germany, Europe’s largest economy braces for power shortages over the coming winter.
