WASHINGTON: President Joe Biden said in an interview that he would decide whether to run for office after the congressional elections in November, and he excoriated former President Donald Trump for holding classified documents at his Palm Beach home , in Florida.
“It’s way too early to make that kind of decision,” Biden said in a 60 Minutes interview on Sunday. “What I do is I do my job. I’m going to do that job, and in the time frame that makes sense after this next election cycle here, until next year, pass judgment on what to do.
Biden, along with Vice President Kamala Harris, has repeatedly attested that he plans to run for re-election in 2024, despite his age – he will turn 80 in November – and low approval ratings. While the president reaffirmed his intention to stand for re-election, he also indicated that the decision was not yet final.
“Is it a firm decision that I run again? That remains to be seen,” Biden said, according to a transcript of the interview. After interviewer Scott Pelley noted that Biden is the oldest president ever, Biden quipped, “pretty good shape, huh?”
The president also pointed to election law requirements that come into effect once a candidate officially declares their candidacy as a reason to wait for a decision, saying that “suddenly a whole series of things come into play”s he had to formalize his intentions. .
The Federal Election Commission requires candidates to file an official statement with the organization and follow its rules on campaign contributions.
Search Mar-a-Lago
Biden, along with his aides, refrained from commenting at length on the FBI’s investigation into classified documents held at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. He said in the interview that he did not ask for information on the matter to avoid any suggestion that he would become involved in the investigation.
But he described his reaction to seeing the FBI photograph of the documents recovered during a search in August.
“How could this happen? he says in the interview. “I thought to myself, ‘What data was there that could compromise sources and methods?'”
It was just “totally irresponsible”, he added.
