IMPHAL: Amid the frenzied search for bodies from debris from the massive landslide in Makhuam Village in Noney District, another landslide killed two women and injured four in Churachandpur district Friday morning.
Official sources claim that a passenger jeep with 13 occupants was moving from it Tipaimukh in nearby Pherzawl district to Churachandur district headquarters when the driver stopped the vehicle at a point between Santing and Saihouan after spotting some trees lying on the road around 6:30 am.
As the driver attempted to clear the trees along the mountain range, a massive landslide suddenly swept the jeep along with him into the deep gorge, killing an elderly woman on the spot and injuring five others, they added.
The point is located approximately 88 km from the Churachandpur District Headquarters and the area falls within the Henglep subdivision of the Kuki-Chin-Mizo-dominated district.
Villagers and security personnel rushed to the scene and evacuated them to a nearby Assam Rifles hospital, where seven of them were discharged after providing first aid before being sent back to the Tipaimukh area.
Among the five injured, who were rushed to Churchandpur district hospital, another woman died of her injuries there, they said, adding that the two deceased women would be sent back to their hometown in the district of Churchandpur. Pherzawl after conducting the autopsy.
Deputy Commission (Cruachandpur) Sharath Chandra Arroju, who visited the injured at the district hospital at the district headquarters, told this reporter that soon after nature’s fury occurred, he sent his subordinate officials concerned about access the situation and also asked to clear the way.
“The heavy construction equipment and excavators have been put into service on site. Now the debris has been cleared and the road is passable,” added the DC.
The district police of Chruchachandpur also rushed to the scene to assess the situation.
