News emerged on Wednesday of the six Belarusian soldiers who went missing in the Luhansk region late last month after volunteering to fight for Ukraine against Russia, with reports confirming that at least one had been killed and another captured.

Soldiers from the Kastus Kalinouski regiment, who swore allegiance to the Ukrainian military in March, reportedly engaged in a deadly exchange with a Russian convoy on June 26.

Half of the patrol managed to escape the firefight, while the other half stayed behind to keep Russian forces at bay, Belarusian news Nasha Niva reported for the first time.

At least one Belarusian fighter – Ivan Marchuk, commander of the Volat battalion – was confirmed to have been killed during the exchange in a video posted by a Russian telegram account, according to various reports on Wednesday.

Marchuk, who was called “Brest”, was a leading figure in the recruitment of the Belarusian fighting force of some 500 volunteers.

Brest reportedly sustained severe injuries to his leg and head while fighting to provide cover for other retreating forces from his regiment.

ZELENSKYY SAYS BELARUS’S INVOLVEMENT IN THE WAR WITH RUSSIA CAN BE AVOIDED

The whereabouts of five other Belarusian soldiers involved in the exchange remained unknown until at least one soldier appeared in a video posted to a Russian Telegram account on Tuesday.

The post claimed he wasn’t the only soldier captured.

“Since our soldier is a contract soldier, not a mercenary, he is officially a prisoner of war,” the regiment Kastus Kalinouski said in response.

Belarusian news reported that the death of at least one and the potential capture of five more soldiers from the regiment is the biggest loss the group of Belarusian volunteers suffered in the last war against Russia.

Members of the Kastus Kalinouski regiment – named after a Belarusian revolutionary who led an uprising against Russian occupation in the 1860s – also fought against Russian forces after Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2014.
