NEW DELHI: Off-spinner Washington SundarReturn to international cricket will be further delayed due to a left shoulder injury suffered in a game over 50 for his county side Lancashire has now ruled him out of three matches ODI series against Zimbabwe from August 18.
“Yes, Washington Sundar is ruled out of the Zimbabwe Series. He suffered a left shoulder injury in the Royal London Cup match between Lancashire and Worcestershire at Old Trafford. He will have to undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy ,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
The last 12 months have been tough for the talented all-around spin bowler from Tamil Nadu, who has missed one set after another due to various types of injuries as well as Covid-19 related issues.
“You feel for Washi. Such a talented guy. Somehow the rubbing of the green isn’t going his way. He needs luck. The last injury is a freak cause he was on the point of playing for India in a week,” another official familiar with the development said.
Washington’s never-ending injury saga began in July 2021 when he fractured his finger while battling for Combined Counties against Team India in a warm-up match.
He played for the county team so that India could test all their players before the series started.
The injury caused him to miss the entire domestic season, then before the series of white balls in South Africa in January 2022, he was down with Covid19.
In February–March, he missed the home white-ball double streak against West Indies and Sri Lanka due to a hamstring injury.
During the IPL in April-May, he split his strap and missed five games for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
After a long rehabilitation, BCCI was instrumental in securing a county contract with Lancashire and he also won five wickets in one matchday for the ‘Roses’.
The 22-year-old has played 4 Tests, 4 ODIs and 31 T20Is so far.
