After losing the first set 7-6(8) in a tie-break, Zverev was leading 6-5 in the second set of the semi-final when the German twisted his ankle for a forehand. Zverev immediately fell and screamed in agony, while grabbing his right ankle.
The 25-year-old had to be wheeled off the pitch in a wheelchair, before eventually returning on crutches to address the crowd. The spectators gave Zverev a loud ovation as he shook hands with the chair umpire and hugged Nadal.
Following the injury, Nadal was victorious and continues his quest for a 14th Roland Garros title and a record 22nd Grand Slam title. On Sunday, he will face Norway’s Casper Ruud, who beat Croatia’s Marin Cilic in the semi-finals 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to his first career Grand Slam final.
Things got weird during this semi-final.
Midway through the third set, a spectator from Court Philippe Chatrier rushed onto the court and appeared to attach herself to the net.
The protester knelt peacefully and wore a white shirt with a message in black ink on the front and back. Both players were escorted off the field while the individual was ejected by security.
The match was suspended for approximately 10 minutes.
