Los Angeles Angels equal inauspicious MLB record as they score 7 solo home runs — but still lose

In what has been a tough season for the Los Angeles Angels, Thursday night was another painful outing.

On the plus side, the team hit seven solo homers, tied for the most in a game by any team all-time.

However, the Angels ultimately lost to the Oakland Atheltics 8-7 in Anaheim, Calif., and in doing so tied an MLB record for most homers scored in a loss.

They are only the sixth team to hit seven homers in a loss, and the first since the Minnesota Twins did so last year against the Detroit Tigers.

“I think we did well,” interim manager Phil Nevin said. “We had seven solos and two more hits. I’ve certainly never seen that. I was thinking about it in the dugout.

“So we swung well, and they say solo home runs won’t beat you, but you feel like if you hit seven you could do it, but it didn’t work for us.”

Shohei Ohtani continued his stellar two-homer season, his 11th multi-homer game in MLB and his fifth this season.

Mickey Moniak, Jared Walsh, Kurt Suzuki, Taylor Ward and Jo Adell also added their own homers, but that wasn’t enough in the lost effort.

It was the first time since 1900 that a team scored seven solo home runs but no others. All seven homers tied an Angels record set in 2003.

According for Elias Sports, teams are now 113-6 all-time when hitting seven home runs in a game.
“When you hit seven home runs in a game, that’s a positive thing,” Walsh said. “We would have liked to get the victory, but the offense, we needed to take it back, so it’s a positive sign.”

The Angels are now 44-61, while the Athletics improve to 41-66.
