CWG 2022: Hoare wins 1,500 metres gold as Wightman denied golden double | Commonwealth Games 2022 News

BIRMINGHAM (England): Australia Olivier Hoare used a devastating late kick to claim a surprise victory in the men’s 1,500 meters at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, as Scotland’s new world champion Jake Wightman was denied a gold double.
After Wightman’s stunning victory at the world championships just over two weeks ago in Eugene, Oregon, a large crowd packed in a sunbathing Alexander Stadium hoping to see the Scot do it again.
But the roars weren’t enough to lift Wightman to the top of the podium as Hoare timed his move to perfection down the home stretch from fourth to top Kenya. Timothy Cheruiyot to line up for the gold.
Hoare finished in a Games record time of three minutes, 30.12 seconds with Cheruiyot just 0.09 seconds to take silver and Wightman settling for bronze.
