Swiatek, who lost to Cornet 6-4 6-2 in the third round match, started slow in the first set, losing the first three games before battling back and taking the next two. The two would split the next four matches, but Cornet would end up winning the set.
In the second set, the momentum seemed to have changed as the 21-year-old Swiatek took a 2-0 lead, but Cornet quickly regained control winning the next six games to close the game.
“Honestly, yeah usually I’m hard on myself. Here I know how I felt before games, I know how I felt when I was training. Let’s just say I didn’t feel like to be at my best, so I’m kind of aware that it could happen,” Swiatek said during the post-game winning streak.
The two-time Polish Grand Slam champion’s 37-game winning streak, dating back to February, is tied for the longest since Martina Hingis in 1997.
“I have no words right now. It reminds me of the time I beat Serena on the same court, exactly eight years ago. This court is a lucky charm for me,” Cornet said after victory.
In 2014, the Frenchwoman beat then No. 1 Serena Williams at Court One to qualify for her first career Grand Slam Round of 16. With the win, Cornet moves to 4-3 in her career against the no. 1
Competing in her WTA-record 62nd consecutive major tournament, Cornet will face Australian Ajla Tomljanovic on Monday.
In Tuesday’s matches on center court, Swiatek recorded her 36th straight win as she beat Jana Fett 6-0 6-3. She dominated the first set against Fett in her first match since Roland Garros, but had to overcome a difficult period in the second when Fett nearly got a double break.
The top seed recovered from the shaky start to the set and played five games in a row, taking her winning streak to 36 games.
