MOSCOW: A drone was shot down over Russia’s headquarters Black Sea Fleet in annexed Crimea on Saturday, a local official said.
“The drone was shot down just above the fleet headquarters” in the city of Sevastopol, city governor Mikhail Razvojaev wrote on Telegram, blaming the attempt to Ukrainian forces.
“It fell on the roof and caught fire,” he said, adding that there was no major damage or casualties.
It was the second such assault on Fleet Headquarters in less than a month, following a drone attack July 31 in her yard injured five people and led to the cancellation of planned Fleet Day celebrations.
It was also the last attack targeting Russian military infrastructure in Crimea, a Black Sea Peninsula which Moscow seized and annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
Also on Saturday, Konstantin Ivashchenko, appointed mayor of the port city of Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine by pro-Russian forces, was the target of an assassination attempt, according to Russian news agencies.
An explosion rocked her car as she drove past a zoo, RIA Novosti news agency reported citing a police source.
Ivashchenko “was not injured,” the source added.
Earlier on Saturday, air defense systems were activated in Evpatoria, western Crimea.
Russian forces shot down a drone near an air base in Sevastopol on Thursday, just two days after explosions ripped through a military base and an ammunition depot in Crimea.
In early August, an explosion at Saki Air Base left one dead and several injured.
