HELSINKI: Prime Minister of Finland Sanna Marin tested negative on a drug test she took to “allay her suspicions” after a video of the 36-year-old party sparked criticism, her office said on Monday.
Marin’s urine sample was tested for the presence of various drugs, such as cocaine, amphetamine, cannabis and opioids, Iida Vallina special adviser to the prime minister, told AFP.
“The drug test performed on Prime Minister Sanna Marin on August 19, 2022 did not reveal the presence of drugs,” Marin’s office said in a statement, adding that the results were signed by a doctor.
“The test was a full drug test. We didn’t choose how the test was done,” Vallin said.
A video leaked last week showed Marin dancing and partying with a group of friends and celebrities that created controversy across the world.
Some interpreted the comments heard on the video as referring to narcotics, which was the subject of much debate on social media and was strongly denied by the Prime Minister.
“To dispel any suspicion, I took a drug test today,” she told reporters at her home on Friday.
Marin previously said she was “hanging out with friends” and the videos were “filmed at private premises.”
She admitted to drinking alcohol. In addition to denying taking drugs, she said she did not witness any drug use by any of the participants.
“Never in my life, not even in my youth, did I do drugs,” she said.
Marin – who was nominated in 2019 at the age of 34 – has previously faced criticism over parties at her official residence.
In December 2021, she faced sustained criticism after it was revealed that she had stayed dancing until the early hours despite being exposed to Covid-19.
A poll commissioned by Finnish broadcaster MTV3 at the time found that two-thirds of those polled thought his night out was a “serious mistake”.
