The 22-year-old, who made his international debut in an ODI in 2019, scored 130 from 97 balls as India netted 289 in eight against Zimbabwe and completed a 3-0 sweep of the hosts with a 13 point win.
“My heart was pounding when I entered the 90s. I had already been out three times in the 90s and had never gotten a hundred in international cricket. It’s always special to get a hundred,” said Gill at the presentation ceremony.
Gill also topped the series runs chart with 245 runs at an average of 122.50 to be judged both man of the match and man of the series.
Known for having all the classic moves in his repertoire, Gill, who played 11 Tests and nine ODIs, was often cheated and criticized for not being able to convert his starts.
In the second ODI, he threw down his wicket for 33 after some sublime shots.
Dedicating his first ODI century to his father Lakhwinder Singh, Gill revealed he received some “schooling” from his father after stepping out cheaply in the second ODI here two days ago.
“My dad was my main trainer. I did a bit of school the day before yesterday when I came out on 33. So this one’s for my dad.”
Gill further stated that he would save the Bat.
“The bat was pretty good and that’s why I changed it after I turned fifty because I wanted to keep it,” he added.
When asked if he was targeting a specific bowler, he replied, “(Sikandar) Raza, (Brad) Evans were playing well and it was crucial to target (other) bowlers.”
“I was just trying to minimize my point-ball percentage. I was just trying to time the ball and not hit it hard,” he said of his shot.
Indian skipper Rahul also praised Gill.
“I haven’t seen him overconfident and that takes composure. To show that kind of temper despite not having played a lot of internationals is really good. He hit well throughout the series and did well in the West Indies and the IPL.
It’s nice to watch when he hits and it’s good to see him use his form and score points.”
It was also a comeback series for Rahul who underwent sports hernia surgery after the IPL where he coached newbies Lucknow Super Giants to a final square.
“It’s good to be back, it feels good to be in the middle. I’ve lined up about 120 overs, I’ve had time in the middle with the bat. I’m tired of coming back after a few months. But that’s what we all want to do, play for India.”
