The “coolest streets in the world” in 2022

(CNN) — When it comes to fashion, street style has as much cachet as runway style – in fact, there are dozens of blogs and Instagram accounts dedicated to chronicling the best streetwear looks.

That’s because urban chic has always started on the streets, where people of all kinds of classes and backgrounds can mingle on their way to work, school, home, and places of entertainment.

This year, Time Out – the media and hospitality brand that publishes local guides to some of the world’s most interesting cities – released its second annual roundup of the world’s coolest streets.

More than a neighborhood, a single street can define the culture of a city.

“Across most of the world, pre-pandemic life is back in full force. People are excitedly making plans and heading out to their own towns and back to town,” said James Manning, editor of Time Out. , in a press release. “Our list of the world’s coolest streets includes the main thoroughfares that informed locals, including our expert editors and contributors, recommend strolling right now.”

This year’s list has 33 streets, three more than the inaugural skyline in 2021. It also includes several new cities, including Taipei, Mumbai, Athens and Accra.

North America

The top of the list this year is rue Wellington, in the Verdun district of Montreal.

Time Out Canada editor Laura Osborne says the street has “killer cocktail bars, stellar brunches, some of the best sandwiches in town and even an urban sandy beach,” and will become pedestrianized in 2023, which will undoubtedly add more freshness points.

Although the United States did not come in first place, America can rest assured knowing that it has the most streets on the list – Calle Ocho in Miami, MacDougal Street in New York (home to the favorite Dante cocktail bar) and Wentworth in Chicago. Avenue does all the cutting.

Mexico’s representative on the list is Avenida Ámsterdam in Mexico City’s trendy Condesa district.

Asia and the Pacific

Five of the top 10 streets are in this region.

Melbourne, Australia tops the 2021 list with Smith Street but has fallen to second place this year. The city’s Gertrude Street was on the list, with Time Out Australia’s Eliza Campbell describing it as “beautiful, unassuming and lacking the frenzied nightlife of its relatively rowdy siblings”.

Tai Ping Shan, a district within a district on the main island of Hong Kong, comes in seventh place.

CNN digital producer Rhea Mogul, who lives down the street, reports that the best parts of life there are the dog-friendly cafes and the “great mix of old and new.” Tai Ping means “peace and stability” in Cantonese, while Shan means “hill”.

A big start for 2022 is Taipei’s Yongkang Street, home to beloved craft beer makers Zhang Men Brewing.

“We have integrated various resources to promote this area to international tourists, and we are very happy to have it listed,” Huang Shih-fang, director of the international business division of the tourism board, told CNN. Taiwan. “We hope to bring tourists back to the area once the border opens.”

Europe

London-headquartered Time Out seemed close to home for some of its picks this year. The coolest thoroughfare in the UK capital in 2022 is Deptford High Street, a mix of street stalls, markets, shops, bars and more, which according to Time Out editor Chris Waywell, is not only the coolest street in London, but its “liveliest”.

Further north, Glasgow’s Great Western Road is the highest entrance to the UK, at number three.

And the Danish metropolis of Copenhagen – which CNN Travel crowned “Europe’s new capital of cool” last year – lands in fifth place. Rue de Værnedamsvej has been dubbed a “mini Paris” by the editors of Time Out, due to the wine and cheese shops and lots of fresh flowers. This must hurt Paris, which was not on the list.

Other European streets that stand out on the 2022 list are Kolokotroni in Athens, Calle Echegaray in Madrid and Capel Street in Dublin.

Of the last of these three, Dublin-based travel writer Nicola Brady says Capel – which rhymes with “maple” – “looks like a good slice of old Dublin”.

She adds that the street, which became pedestrianized earlier this year, has “small hardware stores and pubs that have been around for decades alongside larger Korean and Vietnamese restaurants that are newer on the scene.”
