Olivia Wilde spoke about legal documents that were publicly served on behalf of her ex-boyfriend Jason Sudeikis while on stage, describing him as “evil” and “scary”.
The 38-year-old actress and director, with whom she now has a relationship Harry Styleswas delivered an envelope marked “personal and confidential” at an industry event in Las Vegas in April, while promoting his upcoming thriller Don’t Worry Darling.
He has two children with Sudeikieight-year-old son Otis and five-year-old daughter Daisy, and reportedly in early August won the first part of a custody battle after her request for the children to live in Brooklyn, New York was denied.
In a new cover interview with US entertainment broadcaster Variety, Wilde referred to the incident without naming her former partner.
“It was my workplace,” he said. “In any other workplace, it would have been seen as an attack. It was really upsetting. It shouldn’t have happened. There was a huge security breach, which is really scary.
“The obstacles you had to overcome to enter that room with different badges, as well as special COVID tests that had to be done days in advance, which gave you the bracelets you needed to enter the event – this was something that required foresight.”
Footage of the incident showed Wilde looking surprised after opening the envelope.
The star told Variety that the accident took away the work everyone had put on Don’t Worry Darling.
“I hated that this nastiness distracted from the work of so many different people and the studio I was up there representing,” he said. “Trying to sabotage was really vicious. But I had a job to do; I don’t get distracted easily.
“But, you know, sadly, it wasn’t something entirely surprising to me. I mean, there’s a reason I left that relationship.”
After the incident at CinemaCon, representatives from Sudeikis, 46, confirmed that the documents were related to the jurisdiction of the couple’s children, but said the actor was unaware of how they would be delivered.
CinemaCon CEO Mitch Neuhauser said the event is re-evaluating its security procedures.
Wilde has been in a relationship with Styles, 28, since casting him in Don’t Worry Darling alongside fellow British star Florence Pugh, and in December 2021 said she was “happier” than she ever was.
Styles appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone earlier this week, with Wilde also being interviewed for the article, in which they he addressed the negativity of some of his fans.
Speaking about their relationship with Variety, Wilde said, “I’m not going to say anything about it because I’ve never seen a relationship take advantage of being dragged into the public arena.
“We both go out of our way to protect our relationship; I think it’s from experience, but even just from deep love.”
