Piles of stinking garbage on the streets of Edinburgh are threatening the health and safety of the public, a health authority warned Saturday as garbage strikes in the Scottish capital entered their ninth day.
Public Health Scotland’s warning came when garbage collectors in Newham, a borough of London, also retired for a week over a wage dispute.
Images of food waste and nappies rotting on the streets add to the chaos in the UK as industrial disputes multiply amid rising food and energy costs. Bathers in the UK were warned last week to stay away from dozens of beaches as heavy rain dumped raw sewage into rivers and seas.
Public Health Scotland told local authorities that “decontamination of public areas where the bins have overflowed may be necessary.” He warned that “if organic waste accumulates, it can become a risk to human health.”

The garbage collectors left on August 18 and are planning to stay out of work until August 30. If the wage dispute is not resolved, there will be even more strikes.

Britain is facing a massive cost of living crisis, with wage increases failing to keep pace with inflation, which stood at 10.1% last week. These financial challenges have only increased due to rising energy costs: Authorities say residents of Britain will see an 80% increase in annual energy bills in October.
The country saw waves of strikes this summer, with the public transport system practically coming to a halt in several days due to rail strikes. Primary schools and day care centers in Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, will be forced to close for several days next month if a strike by municipal workers goes on.
In London, Newham Council garbage drivers began a week of strikes on Saturday, with union officials warning there may be more. Sharon Graham, general secretary of the Unite union, said those workers were paid less than others on neighboring councils.
“The council must now focus on reaching a deal with workers facing a financial crisis,” Graham said. “If they don’t, the next few days will undoubtedly mean more union action.”

Britain’s image took a hit this summer. French lawmakers in the European Parliament complained this week that raw wastewater discharged into rivers and seas from the UK also threatens bathing waters, fishing grounds and biodiversity in the EU as well.
