Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang attacked at his home by armed robbers | world news

Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was attacked and robbed at his home by four people wearing masks, club officials said.

The Spanish football giants have confirmed reports that the player and his wife were threatened with guns and iron bars.

Authorities told Spanish daily El Pais that Aubameyang was beaten and forced to open a safe where the couple kept jewelry.

The 33-year-old former Arsenal player and his wife are doing well despite the incident, FC Barcelona have said.

Reports say the couple were tied up and handcuffed during the robbery early Monday.

Authorities said at least four masked looters entered the player’s home and then escaped in a car.

Gabonese international Aubameyang signed for Barcelona earlier this year after long spells with Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and Arsenal.

He was an unused substitute in Barcelona’s 4-0 league win over Valladolid on Sunday and is among the players who should be sold so the club can clear a salary cap.

Two weeks ago, Barcelona’s new signing Robert Lewandowski had a watch ripped off his arm as he arrived for training.

It is not uncommon for footballers’ homes to be targeted in Spain, although the crimes usually occur when players and their families are away during games.

Reported victims in the past include Casemiro, Alvaro Morata, Gerard Pique, Samuel Umtiti, Jordi Alba and former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.

A few years ago, Spanish police busted a gang that broke into players’ homes during games.
