Man mauled to death by lion after climbing fence and entering zoo enclosure in Ghana | world news

A man was mauled to death by a lion after entering its enclosure at a zoo in Ghana, according to the country’s government.

Security guards on routine patrol noticed around noon on Sunday that the middle-aged man had scaled a high lattice fence and entered the restricted area, which contained a lion, a lioness and two lion cubs.

“The intruder was attacked and injured by one of the lions, inside the inner fence of the enclosure,” the forestry commission said in a statement.

He added that the man had died from injuries he sustained in the attack at Accra Zoo in Ghana’s capital.

None of the animals escaped during the incident and the enclosure remained secure, the statement said.

The motive of the intruder entering the compound has not yet been established and authorities have opened an investigation.

Lions are a big draw at the zoo, where reinforced mesh fencing allows visitors to see the animals up close.
