LAHORE: A private hospital in Lahore on Monday refused to hand over the body of pakistani olympian and old hockey Team captain Manzoor Hussaindied of a cardiac arrest, for several hours without fulfilling the due of his treatment.
Hussain, popularly known as Manzoor Junior, was part of the team that won bronze and gold at the 1976 and 1984 Olympics, respectively. He was also part of the hockey teams that won the World Cups in 1978 and 1982.
Hussain, 64, suffered from a heart condition and was taken to hospital early Monday morning after his health deteriorated. The Olympian was admitted to Shalimar Hospital in Lahore where he died.
“The management of the hospital held the body of the legendary player for non-payment of medical expenses for several hours. Later on pakistan hockey (PHF) became aware of the matter and arranged payment of PKR 500,000 (USD 2,266) to the hospital for the release of the body to his family,” a Punjab government official told PTI.
He said it was a huge embarrassment to everyone that a great Olympian died and his body was held by the hospital for non-payment of dues.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tweeted that he was deeply saddened and saddened by her death.
“Gold medalist Manzoor Hussain Jr was an asset to the country and his services to Pakistani hockey will remain unforgettable,” he said.
