ISLAMABAD: A counter-terrorism court in Pakistan on Thursday extended bail for ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan until September 12 in a terrorism case filed against him for threatening police, justice and other state institutions during a rally in the capital’s month.
Judge Raja Jawad Abbas Hassan granted the leader of the Pakistani party Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) bail against a bond of Rs 100,000, the Express Tribune newspaper reported.
At a rally in Islamabad last month, Khan, 69, threatened to press charges against senior police officials, the electoral commission and political opponents for the treatment of his aide. Shahbaz Gillwho was arrested for sedition.
He had also objected to the additional district and session judge Zeba Chaudhrywho had approved Gill’s two-day physical remand at the request of the Capital Territory Police, and said she should “prepare as action will be taken against her.”
Hours after the speech, Khan was convicted under the Anti-Terrorism Act for threatening police, the judiciary and other state institutions during his rally.
The anti-terrorism court had on August 25 granted bail to the head of the PTI until September 1 against a bond of Rs 100,000.
Last week, Khan showed his willingness to withdraw his controversial remarks against the female judge, but refrained from issuing an apology.
In a written response sent to the Islamabad High Court, Khan claimed to be unaware at the time of making the remarks that Chaudhry was a judicial officer as he was under the impression that she was an executive magistrate.
“Defendant (Khan) humbly submits that if the words he spoke are deemed inappropriate, he is prepared to take them back,” Khan said in his response to the court.
On Thursday, Khan arrived at ATC Islamabad amid tight security and proceedings were initiated under the direction of Judge Abbas, who ordered the prosecutor to grant the PTI chairman interim bail for the four new charges added to the first information report (FIR) in the case.
Closing arguments will be heard at the next hearing on September 12.
