NEW DELHI: Indian paddlers have completed their campaign in the Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Laos on a golden note like Jain country and Yashaswini Ghorpade beat Chinese duo Han Xinyuan and Qin Yuxuan 3-2 in a thrilling final on Tuesday.
The Indians won 11-9, 11-1, 10-12, 7-11 and 11-8.
By the way, this was the first gold medal won by Indian juniors in an Asian championship, and it came close to our first mixed gold medal in the CWG thanks to Charat Kamal and Sreeja Akula in Birmingham last month.

In addition, India also picked up three bronze medals, one each in the boys U-19 doubles, girls U-19 singles and boys U-19 team event. Overall, the Indians did well to go home with four medals.
The top-seeded Indian duo started well into a 2-0 lead before the Chinese pair came back to win the next two games. However, in the decider, Payas and Yashaswini combined smartly and attacked in measured fashion to outsmart their opponents.
Earlier, the top-seeded girl from Karnataka performed well until the quarter-finals of the women’s under-19 singles, but lost to Chen Yi of China in the semi-finals, losing the match in consecutive matches of 13-11, 11-9, 11-4. , 11-3.
After the first two matches, where Yashaswini showed her fighting qualities, she ran out of steam in the next two and didn’t play as well.
Payas, who combined with Delhi teammate Yashansh Malik in the U-19 boys’ doubles until the previous round, failed to repeat his performance in the semi-finals against the Japanese duo of Yuta Iimura and Yuhi Sakai.
The Japanese paddlers, who eventually became the gold winners, beat the Indians 11-8, 11-7, 12-14, 11-6 and settled for bronze.
