The United States defended their title by winning an 11th FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup after beating China 83-61 in Sydney on Saturday.
The Americans upped the ante in the second quarter, taking a 43-33 lead at the break, and ultimately clinched a fourth consecutive title.
A’Ja Wilson – who was named tournament MVP – scored 19 and Chelsea Gray 10 as the pair led the way as favorites in front of nearly 16,000 fans at the Superdome in Sydney.
The Americans had impressed throughout Australia, breaking numerous records en route to the final, and were deserved winners.
On Monday, the team scored a record total of points by beating Korea 145-69, and by beating Canada 83-43, the United States recorded the biggest margin of victory in the competition for a semi-final.
Organizers said 145,519 fans attended the tournament – the highest attendance in the competition’s history.
In the other game of the day, Australian great Lauren Jackson scored 30 points as the Opals beat Canada 95-65 in the third-place game.
