Kiev suffers explosions due to apparent missile attacks


The Russian military launched missile attacks on Kiev, Ukraine, early Monday, as well as other locations in the country, after months of relative calm in the eastern European nation’s capital.

The attacks targeted central Kiev and left civilians dead and injured. Rostyslav Smirnov, an advisor to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, said preliminary information shows that at least eight people were killed and 24 injured in just one of the strikes in Kiev.

Kyiv mayor Vitalii Klitchko said explosions have been reported in the city Shevchenko district, which is a large area in the city center that includes the historic center and several government offices.

Lesia Vasylenko, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, shared a photo on Twitter revealing that at least one explosion occurred near the main building of the Kiev National University in central Kiev.

Explosions were also heard in other cities, including Liviv, Kharkiv and Dnipro, which appeared to be the result of missile attacks. Air raid sirens rang in every region of Ukraine, with the exception of Russia-annexed Crimea, for four consecutive hours.

In Lviv, the energy infrastructure was damaged, regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi said. The water supply was cut off in Kharkiv, which was hit three times, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

The last attack in Kiev before Monday was in June, when missiles hit an apartment building, killing one person and injuring six others.

Recent fighting during the country’s war with Russia has concentrated in regions just north of Crimea, which includes Zaporizhzhia, where six missiles were fired from Russian-occupied areas of the Zaporizhzhia region on Saturday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday that an attack that damaged the great bridge connecting Russia to the annexed territory of Crimea was a “terrorist act” by Ukrainian special services.

Putin said in a meeting with the president of the Russian investigative committee that “there is no doubt that this was a terrorist act aimed at destroying critical civilian infrastructure”.
