NEW DELHI: In a major boost for grassroots athletes, the Ministry of Sports Wednesday approved a special grant of Rs 25 crore for equipment upgrade to SAI training centers (STC) across the country.
The decision to give grassroots athletes access to modern equipment was taken at the 56th meeting of the General Body of the Sports Authority of India, which was attended by the Minister of Sports Anurag Thakur and his assistant to the ministry, Nisith Pramanikamong others.
In addition, it was also decided to ensure that the unused infrastructure at SAI the centers are used for sports-related activities.
“All decisions made in today’s meeting are athlete centered. We have decided that SAI will partner with appropriate organizations for the use of infrastructure,” Pramanik said during a briefing to the Athletes. media here.
It was also decided to relax SAI’s recruitment rules so that specialists from different sports fields can be hired easily, in order to strengthen the country’s sports ecosystem.
The meeting was attended by senior ISC officials, including Director General Sandip Pradhan.
“The government is also committed to extending the same facilities to para-athletes as able-bodied athletes and to ensuring that para-athletes have facilities as per their personalized needs,” Pramanik said.
The ministry has decided to provide guide runners to para-athletes at all SAI training centers.
It was also decided at the meeting to create a panel of visiting medical specialists in all ISC NCOEs to support the specific medical needs of athletes.
