Also known as Deepawali, Diwali is a public holiday in India.
Hindu mythology says that on this day Lord Rama had returned from exile. Lord Rama was asked to serve in exile for 14 years following his father Dasharatha’s vow to Kaikeyi. After serving in exile for 14 years, when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya, people welcomed him by lighting terracotta diya. Rama was in exile with his wife Sita and his younger brother Lakshmana.
On this day, people worship the goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu god of wealth and seek her blessings. It is believed that worshiping the Goddess on this day brings good luck, happiness and wealth to the family.
There are many other meanings of Diwali in other religions. For example in Jainism, it marks Lord Mahavira’s nirvana, or spiritual awakening. In Sikhism, this is an important day as on this day Guru Hargobind Ji, the sixth Sikh guru, was released from prison. People who follow Buddhism also observe Diwali.
