The 2022 midterm elections weren’t great, though far from a total failure, for Republican candidates who joined former President Donald Trump in denying the legitimacy of his election defeat in 2020.
Some Holocaust deniers have won their races, according to CNN’s projections — including notably the candidates who will now become the election leader in Republican-dominated states. But deniers have lost a number of closely watched races in competitive states for president, including particularly vocal deniers running for governor of Pennsylvania and for governor and secretary of state in Michigan.
Secretary of State: CNN counted 12 Republican candidates for state election leader who rejected, questioned, or attempted to overturn the 2020 election results. CNN projected four of those candidates as winners (all in Republican-dominated states ) and six as losers (including in Michigan). Two are in races too soon to call — aggressive 2020 conspiracy theorists in the presidential swing states of Arizona and Nevada.
Governor: CNN counted 22 Republican gubernatorial candidates who rejected, questioned, attempted to overturn, or refused to affirm the 2020 election results. CNN projected seven of those candidates as winners (all incumbent governors except for Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas) and 12 as losers (including far-right election conspiracy theorist Doug Mastriano of Pennsylvania, who reportedly won the power to appoint the state’s chief election officer). Three are in races too soon to be called, including energetic Holocaust denier Kari Lake in Arizona.
Senate: CNN counted 19 Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate who rejected, questioned, attempted to overturn, or refused to affirm the 2020 results. (Senators have less power over elections than Secretaries of State or Governors, but they get a vote on certification of Electoral College results in presidential elections and on federal election legislation.) CNN projected 10 of these candidates as winners and six as losers. . Three are in the races too early to call.
