FIFA World Cup: Lewandowski misses penalty as Poland and Mexico play out a goalless draw | Football News

NEW DELHI: Poland’s top scorer Robert Lewandowski failed to convert a penalty as they drew 0-0 against Mexico in their World Cup opener at Stadium 974 on Tuesday. The missed penalty meant Lewandowski had yet to open his account in the first tournament.
The scoreless result left Saudi Arabia top of Group C with three points, following their stunning win over favorites Argentina earlier in the day. Mexico and Poland each shared a match point.

Mexico played most of the attacking football at Stadium 974, but Poland won their penalty in the 56th minute when Hector Moreno brought down Lewandowski only for the Polish captain to shoot too close to Guillermo Ochoa, who saved.
Mexico have signed the striker from Wolverhampton Wanderers Raul Jimenez as a substitute, capping his return from injury, but he failed to provide the breakthrough coach Gerardo Martino was looking for.
