Calcutta youth’s ‘gifts’ save one man in Delhi, two in the city | Kolkata News


CALCUTTA: The heart, liver and kidneys of a 23-year-old accident victim were donated to two recipients in two hospitals in Calcutta and one in Delhi. Rakesh Sharma, who was admitted to IPGMER Trauma Care Center after a car accident on Nov. 29, was pronounced brain dead on Friday night.

This was the twelfth deceased organ donation in kolkata so far this year; the latest was on 29 October.
While Sharma’s heart was transplanted to a girl at Narayana Superspecialty Hospital in Howrah, the kidneys went to a woman at SSKM Hospital. As there was no suitable recipient in Calcutta, the liver was transported to Delhi for a 44-year-old man at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.
Soon after Sharma’s family agreed to the donation, ROTTO began looking for matching recipients. Organ harvesting and harvesting began early Saturday, and all transplant surgeries were finished by morning. A 36-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease at SSKM received kidneys, while an 18-year-old girl from Howrah received heart.
This was the sixth heart transplant at Narayana Superspecialty. “Considering the urgency of the treatment, the heart was ferried through a 6 km green corridor. The patient, an 18-year-old girl, had dilated cardiomyopathy with extremely reduced heart function. She had been repeatedly hospitalized in recent months. The Heart The transplant procedure was performed by a team of heart surgeons Debasis Das, Nilanjan Dutta and Pradeep Narayan. The anesthesia team included Manish Sharma and Rangan Koley. Shubhadeep Das was the pediatric cardiac intensivist,” an official said. “The surgery took four hours. The patient was at very high risk and we hope she will recover soon,” said Amitabha Chattopadhyay, consultant pediatric cardiologist. Ashim Kumar, Facility Director at Narayana Health, Howrah, said: “I am grateful to our expert doctors and the entire team at NSH, Howrah for the success of the heart transplant. The urgency and complexity of the whole procedure was unexplained, but our doctors perceived the scent and the surgery was successful”.
